The Philosophy Department at the University of Waterloo offers both undergraduate and graduate programs. At present, the department consists of 12 full-time faculty members and about 30 graduate students.
The department's officially recognized fields of expertise are:
- Language, Logic and Metaphysics (Faculty members work specifically on topics that include non-classical logics, philosophical logic, the nature of knowledge and assertion, pragmatics, pragmatism, and the history of metaphysics)
- Ethics and Political Philosophy (Faculty members work specifically on topics that include moral epistemology, moral psychology, just war theory, human rights, bioethics, and sexual ethics)
- Philosophy of Science and Mathematics (Faculty members work specifically on topics that include philosophy of physics, history of science, medical explanation, the applicability of mathematics, and mathematical pluralism)
- Philosophy of Mind and Cognitive Science (Faculty members work specifically on topics that include reasoning, moral psychology, mental representation, and theoretical neuroscience)
