He was awarded his PhD in philosophy (1999) from the University of Bristol in England. His dissertation was entitled “Rights and Responsibilities: An Examination of Rawlsian Justice”. Prior to coming to the University of Waterloo Colin held appointments in both Philosophy and Political Science departments. He has taught at the Universities of Manchester, Birmingham, Aberdeen, and Bristol.

- He is the author of An Introduction to Contemporary Political Theory (London: Sage Publications, 2003) and editor of Political Theory: A Reader (London: Sage Publications, 2003). Colin has published articles on topics ranging from genetic intervention and feedom of expression to a citizens’ basic income. His publications include articles in Bioethics, Journal of Medical Ethics, Dialogue, Politics, Journal of Applied Philosophy, Canadian Journal of Law and Jurisprudence, Ratio Juris and Res Publica. He is currently working on a book entitled Justice, Democracy and Reasonable Agreement (under contract with Palgrave Macmillan) in which he defends a “virtue-oriented” conception of distributive justice. His other main research project is an examination of the ethical, social, and legal implications of the new genetics.
