epistemology - A major branch of philosophy that concerns the forms, nature, and preconditions of knowledge.

Most of contemporary anglo-american epistemology is taken up by:

1. the analysis of propositional knowledge (knowing that) as opposed to, e.g., procedural knowledge (knowing how) and acquaintance knowledge (knowing who);
2. the nature, sources, and justification of it's major types, i.e., a priori and empirical;
3. whether the tripartite classical analysis of knowledge as justified true belief is necessary or
4. sufficient (see Gettier problem); and
5. supplying a theory of the justification of empirical knowledge (foundationalism, coherentism, or other).
